Students learn about wind energy and build a model of a windmill using the Topobo construction kit. They program the blades to spin and discuss how and why the blades spin and how the windmill could be used in other settings. By completing this activity, students should fulfill New Zealand curricular
requirements in the areas of:
Computational Thinking: Level 1 – Progress Outcome 1.
Designing/Developing Digital Outcomes: Level 2 – Progress Outcome 1. Science: Level 1
Students are encouraged to explore the effects of wind on everyday objects like sticks, leaves, and rocks. They are encouraged to explain how wind energy can move objects. After watching a a 1-minute video of windmills generating electricity in New Zealand they’re tasked to build a model of a windmill.
